Label Profile - Wave Music

Wave Music was started in 1995 by its legendary founder Francois Kevorkian. It was created as a means to release cutting-edge, timeless music that doesn’t necessarily fit the norm of what most people come to expect of a New York ‘dance’ indie label. Rather than concentrating on a specific style, the label’s mission has been to bring out an eclectic and musically varied selection of music. Through its association with some of dance music’s finest artists, producers and DJ’s, Wave has in the span of a short few years achieved a reputation for excellence and innovation in this crowded field.

Its sister labels, StreetWave Music, Wave Classics and Clicktracks have a slightly more defined orientation. StreetWave will release material that is more urban, such as hip-hop, jazz and r&b; Wave Classics specializes in bringing out some of the most enduring and influential out-of-print records of previous decades; Clicktracks delivers minimal techno and tribal grooves for the new millenium.

As well, Wave is distributing some other quality imprints, such as Chez Music, Bombay Records and Tribal Winds.

Teen Sentenced To Listen To Afroman ‘Because He Got High’

A 17-year-old arrested for possessing a marijuana pipe is being forced to listen to Afroman’s “Because I Got High” (Yes, I know you don’t need to hear the song one more time) and write a report about it by a Massachusetts District Court judge.

Matthew Fournier of East Hartford, Connecticut, was sentenced Wednesday in Springfield to listen to the “stupid rap song,” as Judge Nancy Dusek-Gomez referred to Afroman’s summer hit, paying particular attention to the line “Now, I’m a quadriplegic and I know why/ Because I got high,” according to the Associated Press. The judge continued the case for six months and said she would dismiss misdemeanor alcohol and drug charges (Fournier was also caught with a bottle of whiskey and 10 bottles of beer), if the teen completed his report on the song and stayed away from liquor and drugs.

“You’re shaming your mother in front of these good people,” Dusek-Gomez scolded from behind her bench. She also required Fournier to submit to random drug testing.

The district attorney didn’t object to the sentence.

Profile - Boo Williams

Boo Williams was born and raised in Chicago growing up on the south side…where alot of the heavy hitters come from. Born in ‘67, His musical expressions are inspired by the seventies era from disco to some of the best jazz he could ever listen to back then. Influences like Patrice Adams, Roy Ayers, The Tramps, Gil Scott Heron and Captain Sky - his heroes from back then.In the early 80s Boo started to take his spinning seriously and started playing in Chicago at some of the hottest spots such as hotels like the Bismarck, Ascott, Congress and clubs like the Powerhouse, where legends like Lil’ Louis, Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy were performing. Not long after that another person stepped up to the plate - Mr. Fingers aka Larry Heard. He set the standards for Chicago house music with hits like “A Path", “Can You Feel It?", “Waterfall", “Bring Down The Walls", “Mysteries of Love” and “A Corner Called Jazz.” He is the reason for Boo making music today.

Glenn Underground and Tim Harper welcomed Boo with open arms into their group, Strictly Jazz Unit, who are to this day his true family. Boo thanks especially those people who support his music: clubs, record stores, labels, great producers and DJs all over the world.

Fender Rhodes Super Site

If you are Fender Rhodes fan like I am, you need to check out the Fender Rhodes Super Site! I own a Rhodes Suitcase Piano myself.

A Short History…
Began in 1996 under the name Rhodes SupportNet, later to be called the Fender Rhodes SupportNet. The Rhodes Help Desk was created by James as a technical resource for Rhodes piano owners like himself. The site started as an online manual for people doing their own Rhodes repairs, then grew to include a database of Rhodes technicians worldwide.

The site became more complete with a contribution from Frederik Adlers: an article he had written for the Swedish music magazine MM about the history and legend of the Fender Rhodes. A flood of questions from the site’s visitors also prompted a series of online technical articles, repair tips, and the ever-growing Rhodes FAQ.

Afghan Music Hits Virgin Territory

KABUL, Afghanistan – It has taken less than a month to kick the Taliban out of the top 40, and business is booming in Afghanistan’s music stores.

The only cassettes Kabul’s kiosk owners had on offer during the rule of the Taliban were tuneless taped readings from Koranic verses.

Television, photographs, lipstick, neckties, playing cards and music – except for religious music – were banned as part of the Taliban’s campaign to create the purest Muslim state on earth. Don’t stop ’til you get enough

One shopkeeper claims to move between 5,000 and 10,000 music cassettes a week and sells out of whatever stock he has. That is a 250 percent increase in sales.

Some Afghan women chose to cast off their burqas in public, while others are still nervous of the consequences
But the range on offer is still limited and they’ve got a lot of ground to cover to catch up with the latest from the U.S. and U.K. billboard charts.

Afghanistan’s music fans are still a couple of decades behind, with the 80s currently reigning supreme. One storekeeper sold a record 100 Michael Jackson tapes in a week.

But if the popularity of local crooners is anything to go by, he’s got his work cut out for him.

The ‘king of pop’ is currently overshadowed by local favorite Farhod Daria, who sells as many as five times the number of cassettes Jackson does.

And newcomer Nasi Jan is selling more than 1,000 cassettes in a day.

But Britney Spears hasn’t yet a chance, and who knows what the Afghans will make of Madonna, the unstoppable Mick Jagger or the Spice Girls.

Maybe the wait will be a little longer before Afghans are seen dancing in the streets.

The Mullet Family!

Remember when you used to have a rocker haircut, just like the guitarist from Poison? Hopefully NOT. The photo you are about to see is very disturbing. It’s an entire family with mullet haircuts. The poor kid with the “up doo” kind of reminds of the lead character in the new “Lord of the Rings” movie. Bilbo?

See photo on next page. Click below…

Nice hair, dudes!

Hardware vs. Software Music Production

These days with the advent of Reason (by Propellerheads) I am starting to wonder if people will need hardware sound studios to produce music. Sequencers are great (Cubase/Logic/MOTU Performer), but this software package is different. I myself have always enjoyed using hardware due to the quality and response time. It looks like this type of software is finally catching up. Does this kind of software make it easier for the average person to own a full “soft” studio?

Reason allows the user to add more “racks” to the software system.

Here is the info from the website:

Each unit in Reason’s virtual rack is edited from its own on-screen front panel. All the sliders, knobs, buttons and functions of the equivalent hardware are there. But more importantly, on several counts, Reason is better than hardware.

Need another piece of gear? Forget your overdraft and save yourself the bus fare to the music store. Choose what you need from the Create menu, and it appears in your rack, logically patched into the signal chain. If you ever wished you had eleven samplers, Reason is definitely for you.

Don’t like the routing? Press the Tab key, and the rack will turn over, revealing inputs, outputs, CV and Gate connections. Use the on-screen patch cords to set up complex routings and cross-device modulation patches. And if you run out of mixer channels, just create another mixer.

All the sounds you need. Reason ships with a large (500mb+) sound bank with all the sounds you need to get going. Hundreds of loops, drum kits and samples from e-LAB, hundreds of multisampled instruments from Dublab and hundreds of Synth patches will keep you busy for a while.

Disco Fresh Website

I came across this website, doing a search for MP3s. It’s got a great deal of disco “history” with sound bytes and bios. Get a proper disco education. It’s worth checking out: discofresh.com One of my favs: The Brothers Johnson! from the “Light Up the Night” LP

Light up the night! Funky showmen with a disco flair, the Brothers Johnson were actually guitarist/vocalist George Johnson and bassist/vocalist Louis Johnson. The group received attention as top session players for several big RB bands…Quincy Jones “discovered” the talented duo and produced their early albums adding Q’s signature smooth production style. Their debut album, Look Out for Number One, immediately established the group as budding superstars. Follow up albums Right On Time, Blam and Light up the Night all were commercial and critical successes. George and Louis were masters of stylish yet complex funk melodies and disco textures that would lift you up off your ass and onto the dance floor.

Anti-piracy feud bodes ill for Web music…

By all rights, it should be a banner few months for digital music.
A high-powered new generation of digital music players is heading for Christmas stockings. Almost simultaneously, the major record labels are releasing their catalogs online after years of stalling. Unfortunately, the two campaigns might as well be happening on different planets. People using hot new music devices such as Apple Computer’s iPod or Compaq Computer’s iPaq will not be able to play music from the Pressplay and MusicNet subscription services, which for the first time will make songs legally available online.
The disconnect speaks volumes about the fragmented state of the so-called digital rights management industry, which provides anti-piracy technology. Consumer electronics companies that once paid some lip service to helping fight digital music piracy are now releasing products that will boost demand for the huge amount of free–if legally questionable–music still available online.

Kurzweil Music Systems and ‘The Singularity’

We all may have owned or at least toyed with a Kurzweill keyboard at one time or another. I used one on one of my first records actually. Some people may not know that Kurzweill has also written some amazing books, like “The Age of Spiritual Machines". The concept of the book is that eventually computers exceed human intelligence. Which to most readers, does not seem possible, at least in our time. But through a series of essays and eventually the future time line, he does prove his point (at least in my non-Luddite mind).

I’m not sure where the guy comes up with this stuff. He’s either a genius or totally INSANE. His new book is even more bizarre, it’s titled “The Singularity is Near". a quote from the website:
‘"The Singularity” is a phrase borrowed from the astrophysics of black holes. The phrase has varied meanings; as used by Vernor Vinge and Raymond Kurzweil, it refers to the idea that accelerating technology will lead to superhuman machine intelligence that will soon exceed human intelligence, probably by the year 2030. The results on the other side of the “event horizon,” they say, are unpredictable. We’ll try anyway.’
